Air France trials immersive entertainment system

System being tested in Business class on Paris CDG–St. Martin and St. Martin–Paris CDG flights

Air France is testing an immersive entertainment system with virtual reality headsets allowing passengers to enjoy 3D and 2D films or series.

The new entertainment system uses a virtual reality headset to screen films and series in 3D or 2D, literally immersing passengers in the film in isolation from the rest of the cabin.

The new system is being tested in Business class on board an A340 aircraft operating Paris-Charles de Gaulle – St. Martin and St. Martin – Paris-Charles de Gaulle flights. Four headsets are offered on board with a selection of some forty films and series.

Air France is working with American-French company SkyLights on the project.

The trial run will be a valuable learning experience for the airline as it seeks to improve its passenger entertainment. It will also help SkyLights to continue to develop and improve its solution.

Depending on passenger reaction to the new system, it could be rolled out on other flights in the months ahead.

Last month, French railway company SNCF deployed the Skylights immersive entertainment solution onboard the TGV link between Paris and Milan. The service, a first in European rail travel, allows first class passengers to enjoy the latest blockbuster films and trending series in 2D and 3D on their own personal movie screen.
