Two airports in South Korea are introducing biometric identification systems for Korean passengers on domestic flights.
At the moment domestic passengers need to present an ID and a boarding pass to go airside. From January 29, Korean nationals on flights between Gimpo International Airport and Jeju International Airport can use new biometric egates that check their identification using their biometric information instead of identity cards.
The new system should mean faster boarding procedures while reinforcing airport security.
South Korean citizens over 14 years will be able to travel without their ID card once they have registered their biometrics.
The registration process gathers passenger ID cards and finger prints or palm vein patterns at either airport. Both airports have already started registration.
The system is being tested on the Gimpo to Jeju route first, the most popular domestic route, with plans to expand it to other domestic airports in Busan, Daegu and Cheongju this year.
