Passengers at Narita International Airport will be able to convert leftover foreign currency into usable digital currency from tomorrow.
The Japanese airport is installing a new kiosk from TravelersBox that allows passengers to convert their leftover coins into e-cash.
U.S. dollar, euro, yuan and yen coins can be changed into 12 kinds of electronic money, including those used by Facebook and Skype.
Travel payment cards like Japan’s dominant Suica and Pasmo systems will not be available immediately, but Narita aims to expand the service to include these other payment types.
The airport expects the kiosk to be used by passengers leaving Narita who will have unused Japanese coins as well as those returning to Japan with foreign coins.
Location
The kiosk will be installed on the first floor of the airport’s Terminal 1 building, and will be available daily from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
How it works
- Passengers deposit the leftover coins and notes in the kiosk and supply an email address.
- TravelersBox send an e-mail confirmation with redeem instructions.
- Passengers click on the link in the e-mail and follow the instructions.
- The deposit will be available within 48 hours.
TravelersBox currently has kiosks at a number of airports, including:
- Canada – Toronto Pearson
- Georgia – Tbilisi
- Israel – Tel Aviv
- Italy – Milan Malpensa
- Philippines – Manila
- Turkey – Ankara, Izmir, Istanbul Ataturk
