Discover Airlines tests new in-flight entertainment on A320

Lufthansa-owned Discover Airlines is trialling a brand new inflight entertainment system on one of its Airbus A320s.

The new IFE system comes from the German company AERQ and is the first installation.

Passengers can enjoy state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment, with large screens at every seat, extensive and personalized content and, from 2025, high-speed internet.

And it is all free, or more correctly, included in the ticket price.

The refitted Airbus A320 will fly medium-haul routes from 29 March 2024 for a test period of at least three years.

The seat back screens have been installed on the Geven Essenza slimline seats that Discover Airlines already uses.

They feature 14-inch seat back screens with 4K resolution and user-friendly touchscreens.

Passengers can also connect their own devices and headphones to the screen via Bluetooth.

In addition to a large selection of films, series, podcasts, games and a moving map in 3D, the system offers the option of integrating numerous apps and services.

The system is an open cloud-based IT platform, so there are no physical servers on board and that saves weight and costs.

At the start, Discover Airlines passengers will be able to find out about their destination and book tours on the way to their holiday.

From the start of 2025, the aircraft will also be equipped with the latest internet technology, which will enable fast surfing, payment and booking functions, streaming and the integration of many other functions.

“Order to Seat” is also planned as part of this, allowing passengers to order and pay for food, drinks and products from the in-flight shop via the screen during the flight.

    Supplier

Based in Hamburg, AERQ is a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik and LG Electronics.

The cooperation between AERQ and Discover Airlines is supported by the Lufthansa Group Innovation Runway, an internal Group initiative that promotes innovative solutions within the Lufthansa Group and with external partners.
