Oman Airports Speeds Up Immigration with New Biometric E-Gates
Muscat International Airport has introduced new biometric e-gates to accelerate the immigration process for arriving and departing passengers.
Omani citizens and residents holding an Omani residence card can now enjoy faster travel times by using these automated gates.
The e-gates use facial recognition and fingerprint technology to swiftly verify travel documents. Passengers’ live biometrics are captured and compared against data stored in the Royal Oman Police system.
Initially, 12 e-gates have been installed for arrivals, capable of processing up to 24,000 passengers daily.
Departing economy class passengers can use six e-gates, with a capacity of 1,000 passengers per hour.
Oman Airports plans to expand the number of e-gates to accommodate increasing passenger traffic.
This new system aims to provide a quick and secure self-service experience, minimizing interaction with security personnel. By streamlining the immigration process, passengers can expect significantly reduced waiting times.
Alignment with IATA One ID
The biometric system is fully compliant with the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) One ID program.
This global initiative seeks to simplify the travel experience by sharing passenger information in advance and enabling contactless airport processes using biometric identification.
Ultimately, IATA One ID envisions a future where passengers can move seamlessly through airports, from bag drop to boarding, using only biometric data without the need for passports or boarding passes.
IATA represents over 300 airlines worldwide.
