Zimbabwe introduces biometric egates for immigration

The system aims to reduce congestion, improve efficiency, and enhance border security by eliminating the need for manual immigration checks.

Zimbabwe has introduced biometric checks at its borders to automate tasks that have historically been carried out by human agents, such as checking passports, verifying visas, and managing entry/exit records.

Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE) has introduced 14 automated border control (ABC) eGates for arriving and departing passengers.

The introduction of ABC eGates at HRE represents the first phase of a broader Online Border Management System (OBMS), automating immigration procedures and providing a faster and contactless experience for passengers with e-passports.

This system aims to streamline immigration processes nationwide, potentially including major border posts like Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport (BUQ) near Bulawayo.

How it works

This ABC eGate compares a live photograph or fingerprint of the passenger with the biometric details in the epassport.

If the biometric data matches and the passenger has no outstanding offences, they are allowed to proceed.
