Alaska offers health app to international passengers

Alaska Airlines is now offering the VeriFLY app for international passengers flying to the U.S.

VeriFLY is a mobile app that acts as a digital health passport. It allows for real-time verification of COVID-related credentials, like health questionnaires and diagnostic lab results. Passengers can store proof of their negative COVID test, or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19, in addition to their health attestation form in the app.

Use of the app is optional.

How it works

Passengers download the VeriFLY app to a mobile device from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store, at least seven hours before departure.

They create a personal profile on their mobile device and are then prompted to confirm details for their trip including:

  • Their flight information (this allows the app to look up destination requirements)
  • A negative COVID-19 test that fulfills their destination’s requirements
  • Any required documentation for travel to their destination based upon requirements published at that time

As passengers verify each required element for travel, the app verifies that the passengers’s data matches a country’s requirements and displays a simple ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’ message.

Alaska says that VeriFLY may take up to six hours to validate information is correct and confirmed.

At the airport, passengers show their verified details to an Alaska agent and are then given expedited check-in.

The app also provides passengers with reminders when their travel window is coming to a close or once their credential has expired.

American Airlines and British Airways use of VeriFLY

On March 31, 2021, Alaska will officially become a member of the oneworld global alliance. Earlier this week two oneworld members made announcements about their use of VeriFLY.

Earlier this week America Airlines announced they were expanding the use of VeriFLY to passengers traveling from all of American’s domestic airports to eight countries:

  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Jamaica
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • El Salvador
  • Honduras
  • Guatemala

British Airways also announced the start of a trial of VeriFLY with passengers who are eligible to travel between London and the US.

The app comes from Daon, a privately owned company based in Virginia, USA.
