Free checked bag on Alaska for Visa Signature card-holders

Offer is for Alaska Airlines Visa Signature consumer cardholders. Popular promotion launched earlier this year, becomes ongoing card benefit

Alaska Airlines today announced it is doing away with the standard fee for the first checked bag for Alaska Airlines Visa Signature consumer cardholders.

The move comes at the same time as JetBlue has started charging for the first checked bag for passengers who buy the lowest of its new multi-tier fare system.

Alaska first launched a month-long free checked bag promotion for all Mileage Plan members in January. In February, Alaska extended the promotion to its Visa Signature consumer cardholders.

Now tt’s a permanent, ongoing benefit for card-holders. Up to six people booked on the same reservation also will get a free checked bag.

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature cardholders enjoy 25,000 bonus miles upon approval when they apply at alaskaair.com. They also earn one mile for every dollar spent on retail purchases and three miles for every dollar spent with Alaska Airlines. Visa Signature consumer cardholders also get a companion fare every year – buy one roundtrip ticket and take a friend along for the ride for as little as $121.**

Sangita Woerner, Alaska’s vice president of marketing:

“This is a benefit our customers have been asking for. Today we’re thrilled to announce that our Visa Signature consumer cardholders and their friends and family traveling in the same reservation with them will enjoy one free checked bag with every flight – as a core benefit of our card program.”

Checked Baggage Fees

The saving can be considerable. When baggage rules and fees apply, Alaska has a checked baggage fee for standard sized bags of $25 each for the first two bags, and $75 for each additional bag.
