Düsseldorf Airport installing new self check-in kiosks and self bag drops

New self-service systems from Materna ips

Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) is implementing a number of new self-service check-in kiosks and self bag drops.

Düsseldorf Airport is the fourth busiest passenger airport in Germany, after Frankfurt, Berlin and Munich. It is an important gateway for the Rhine-Ruhr region, a big industrial area.

The airport offers flights to and from about 150 destinations with over 50 airlines. It had more 16 million passengers in 2022 and expects about 20 million in 2023.

The airport plans to use the self-service kiosks and bag drops to offer passengers more comfort, better service and a smoother travel experience.

Two step process

The self-service system is from Materna and will use the two-step process.

Step 1:  passengers can check-in and print bagtags at the self-service check-in kiosk. Those that are already checked in can use a kiosk just to print the bagtags.

The passengers attach the tags to their bags and go to the self bag drop.

Step 2: the passengers drop their bags at one of the self bag drop systems.

The airport believes the two step process shortens waiting times and will help it cope with passenger volumes during peak times. The systems will be installed in different phases throughout the year.
