Passengers on United will be able to get online inflight for free starting in late 2025.
United Airlines is taking inflight connectivity to new heights with the implementation of free, high-speed Wi-Fi across its entire fleet of more than 1,000 aircraft.
Starting in late 2025, passengers can ditch the Wi-Fi worries and stay connected throughout their journey.
Free inflight Wi-Fi
Currently, accessing the internet onboard United comes with a price tag of $8-$10. The new service eliminates those charges, allowing passengers to browse, stream, and stay productive for free.
The new service will give United passengers the same high-speed, low-latency internet service in the air that they enjoy on the ground.
Passengers will be able to access live TV and streaming services, social media, shopping, gaming and more, on seatback screens and personal devices simultaneously.
First passenger flights expected in late 2025
United plans a phased rollout starting with test flights in 2025. The airline will equip its entire fleet (over 1,000 aircraft) with the necessary antennas and routers to ensure a seamless Wi-Fi experience for all passengers.
Supplier is Starlink
The system is Starlink. Developed by SpaceX, it could revolutionise inflight internet access.
This network uses many smaller, lower-orbiting satellites compared to traditional systems. This translates to faster signal speeds and wider coverage.
A small, thin terminal is installed on top of the aircraft. That allows it to receive strong, fast internet signals from the satellites.
The terminal switches connections from satellite to satellite as the aircraft flies, providing an uninterrupted internet experience for passengers.
This allows passengers to use the internet all over the globe, including over oceans, polar regions and other remote locations previously unreachable by traditional cell or Wi-Fi signals.
