JAL adds security wait times to Countdown app

New function gives waiting times in security check areas at Tokyo Haneda's Terminal 1.

Japan Airlines has added a new function to its Countdown app that gives waiting times in security check areas at Tokyo Haneda’s Terminal 1.

The new function will be available from July 1 and is part of JAL’s Smart Style concept, which aims to deliver innovative travel experiences at home airports and in the air for passengers that are “Simple, Convenient and Speedy”.

The airport will feature a new system developed by Hitachi that can measure the waiting time in security check areas. This new system means that JAL can add the new function on its JAL Countdown app for smartphone.

The system was developed in response to the expectation of customers for providing an improved departure experience at the airport.

Passengers can use the new service to check the waiting time at four security check areas at Haneda’s Terminal 1, and can then choose the most time-saving way through security.

JAL Countdown app

JAL launched its Countdown app for Apple Watch in April this year.

Tailored specifically for Apple Watch, the JAL Countdown app provides passengers with timely information about domestic flights – including flight status and boarding gate details – as well as boarding procedures and notifications at the airport.

By tapping notifications delivered on Apple Watch, passengers can check gate details, flight status and boarding times on their wrist. Passengers can also countdown the exact time to their flight in increments of ten minutes, giving them worry-free time to shop, eat or relax before their flight. With a two dimensional QR code, passengers can board flights, go through security check points and enter airport lounges right from their Apple Watch.
