UK regional airline Flybe collapses

Small airline part owned by Richard Branson

Flybe, the UK regional airline, has collapsed.

The long demise of the troubled airline finally concluded last night.

Based in Exeter, Flybe was small in overall UK terms but was a huge carrier at some UK airports. It operated out of more than 30 UK airports, often being the dominant carrier.

For example, at Southampton, Flybe operated over 90% of flights. 78% at Exeter, 57% at Jersey and over 50% at Cardiff.

So the impact will be felt across many more comapnies than just the airline.

The airline partly blamed COVID-19. Given that Italy is the European country most affected so far, questions will be asked about how certain airlines will survive. Alitalia?
