Kansai International Airport (KIX) has installed 12 e-gates at Terminal 1 to check boarding passes before security.
The e-gates are at international departures to automate the verification of boarding passes and
speed up processing of departing passengers.
With the new e-gates, passengers self-scan their boarding pass to enter the security screening area, bypassing manual scanning by airport staff.
As passengers can use the e-gates without touching them they can also be seen to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The 12 e-gates are in 3 blocks:
- Departures 1 has 4 e-gates for general use and 1 for Fast Track
- Departures 2 has 2 e-gates for general use
- Departures 3 has 4 e-gates for general use and 1 for Fast Track
As of today, Departures 1 and 2 are closed; only Departures 3 is in use.
